  • Simulator Training

New drivers--especially those looking to obtain a commercial driver’s licence (CDL)--can greatly benefit from training on a simulator, as well as behind the wheel. Modern simulators are highly refined tools, and the driver gains confidence and competence training with one. One thing to look for in a CDL training school is the use of simulators in their program. They enhance the program, and give you more value for dollar in your training. Benefits of using simulators in CDL training The first big benefit of simulator use, especially with the SimuRide system, is safety. Because the new driver is starting out with equipment which completely simulates the road experience--but takes place inside--the driver learns the tools of the trade without the risk of being on the road. And that safety benefits both the driver and other drivers. After time on the simulator, the vehicle itself will feel more comfortable, and the driver will know it better. The driver will also have experience in the conditions they’ll face on the road. Simulators lead to less stress for both students and instructors, because they know that the option to stop safely is available. The student will have an element of fun with the simulator, since it will feel like a video game. This can lead to both a more relaxed confident driver, but can assure an alert driver once they get behind the wheel. Another advantage of simulator work is the reduced emissions and vehicle wear-and-tear, as well as the reduced use of diesel fuel, which saves money. Are simulators effective at teaching truckers to drive? The first thing to note is that professional pilots have been trained to fly on simulators for decades, and the airline industry does have a notable record for safety. While simulators can not be the entire training for a pilot or driver, it has a valuable place. Truck simulators do not hold trainees back. They learn skills just as effectively as those trained in vehicles. Simulators can also train drivers for extreme situations which might be rare--but difficult to train for safely. For example, blowouts of a steer tire may not happen to a given driver, but when it does happen, it requires fast, precise response. Simulators can create dangerous situations and allow practice to ensure the driver knows how to respond. At least one company, Schneider, found a dramatic decrease in accidents in a short period of time after introducing fleet-wide simulator training. How do the simulators work in CDL training? Simulators provide the seating of a real truck, as well as three or more front view panels and two panels for rear view mirrors. The driver-in-training has all the tools needed to drive the truck--dashboard and controls. Simulators even allow the feel of driving at night. Simulator software tracks the driver’s actions as they encounter situations. It notices all the details of driving, including things an instructor might miss because he was focusing on something else: Missed gear shifting Forgetting the seat belt Exceeding speed limits Missing a stop sign or red light Not giving proper spacing to other vehicles The information is recorded and is available immediately to the instructor and student. Simulators are a great training tool because of the safe, immediate feedback. Simulators also can be programmed to simulate a wide variety of driving situations: Snowy, windy highways CIty congestion with deliveries Rainy days Dealing with other, bad drivers Dealing with other, bad drivers As you pursue your CDL training, look into a school which offers simulator training. You’ll find that the instruction works, is fun, and prepares you for the road. You’ll be more confident when you do get behind the wheel.

Explore the different types of jobs below. Types of Trucking Job Opportunities Long-Distance Truck Driving Jobs Long-distance drivers, also called long-haul or over-the-road (OTR) drivers, operate heavy trucks. You’ll either have day trips where you’ll return home the same day, or have a layover until the next day. You may also travel to more distant points, and be away from home base for a week or longer. Local Trucking Jobs With local trucking jobs, you’ll operate light, medium, and heavy trucks. Tasks include pick-up and delivery operations, route-sales, or customer delivery. You’ll have more contact with customers than long-haul drivers and usually make many more stops each day. Those in route-sales often need selling skills as well as driving skills. Specialized Truck Drivers These types of truck drivers handle certain types of equipment designed for unique commodities that are used in specialized trucking operations, both long-distance and local. Examples are double and triple trailers, auto carriers, dry and wet bulk carriers, tank trucks, and heavy specialized equipment. These drivers need extra training to understand and operate their specialized trucks. Drivers of Hazardous Materials These individuals need more extensive training, which is usually provided by their employers. These drivers must know the special characteristics of the loads they haul, how to handle them safely, and what to do in case of emergencies, such as leaking containers. Owner-Operators or Independent Truck Drivers These people own their equipment and actually run small businesses. They make up a large segment of the long-haul trucking industry. Often they begin as salaried drivers, then buy a truck and become independent contractors, hauling freight for one or several companies. Many husband and wife owner-operator teams contract out to the moving industry. Want to see what truck driving jobs are available to you?
